Consultant Plastic Surgeons

Thanassi Athanassopoulos

Consultant Plastic Surgeon & Medical Director

Thanassi Athanassopoulos studied Medicine at Oxford University and King's College Hospital London, graduating with distinction before completing specialist Plastic Surgery training in Scotland. He is widely recognised for his expertise in cosmetic facial surgery, breast surgery, and complex secondary revision procedures.

He worked in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery within the NHS for over 25 years and served as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Aberdeen University Medical School, specialising in reconstruction of complex facial skin cancers, surgery for facial weakness, and breast reconstruction. His consultant practice also extended to Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital, where he was responsible for reconstructive surgery in young children.

Mr Athanassopoulos attained the Doctor of Medicine (DM) degree from Oxford University, the highest research qualification awarded by the institution, following three years of research at the Stem Cell Research Laboratory, John Radcliffe Hospital, focusing on regenerative therapies and stem cells. In recognition of his research contributions, he was awarded a Research Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Young Scientist Award from the British Blood Transfusion Society.

He is among a small number of surgeons in Scotland to have undertaken advanced, dedicated training in cosmetic surgery following completion of plastic surgery training. To further refine his expertise, he trained internationally with leading surgeons, including specialist facial aesthetic and breast surgery training in the Netherlands, Austria, and New Zealand, and advanced reconstructive burn surgery at the National Burn Centre in New Zealand.

Marc-James Hallam

Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Marc-James Hallam is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and a Clinical Lecturer at Aberdeen University Medical School. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed academic articles and textbook chapters, many of which have been presented at international meetings.

Mr Hallam completed his initial plastic surgery training in London, including time at the renowned Queen Victoria Hospital. He then undertook a two-year research project at the McIndoe Surgical Centre and Imperial College London, focusing on anti-scarring treatments in cosmetic breast surgery, for which he was awarded an MD (Doctorate of Medicine).

He completed his specialist training in Scotland, gaining broad experience across all aspects of plastic and cosmetic surgery, and was awarded his FRCS (Plast). Following this, he worked as a Locum Consultant at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Ninewells Hospital, and undertook a specialist fellowship at The Christie Hospital, receiving advanced training in complex cancer reconstruction.

Mr Hallam specialises in breast surgery, including microsurgical breast reconstruction, and the management of complex skin cancer cases. He is a fully accredited plastic surgeon and a member of BAPRAS, with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality, individualised patient care.

Smriti Bhatta

Senior Clinical Lecturer | Fertility & Assisted Conception

Dr Smriti Bhatta graduated from Calcutta Medical College in 2000 and completed her MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2003. After relocating to the UK in 2005, she achieved MRCOG in 2007 and subsequently completed specialist training, being awarded FRCOG by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

She works as a Senior Clinician at the Aberdeen Fertility Centre, where she is a core member of the fertility and assisted conception services. Her role includes direct patient care, training of clinical staff and junior colleagues, and ensuring delivery of evidence-based, safe, and clinically effective fertility services.

Dr Bhatta is actively involved in research within the centre, has supervised postgraduate research students, and holds a strong academic interest in medical education. She was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2020 and currently serves as Deputy Lead for Assessment within healthcare programmes.

General Practitioner

Dr Olivia Black is a UK-trained General Practitioner, having completed her medical training in Edinburgh and Glasgow. She has worked across both NHS and private practice since 2017.

She has a particular clinical interest in skin health and women's health, bringing a thoughtful, medically grounded approach to both general practice and non-surgical aesthetic care. Dr Black is known for her calm, thorough consultation style and her emphasis on developing personalised treatment plans based on sound medical assessment.

Leah Athanassopoulos

Psychotherapist | Educator | Programme Director (Counselling)

Leah Athanassopoulos is a psychotherapist and educator with over a decade of experience supporting individuals and couples through emotional, relational, and psychological challenges. She brings a thoughtful combination of clinical expertise, academic leadership, and relational insight to her work, offering a calm, structured, and compassionate approach to mental health care.

Leah is the Programme Director for Counselling at the University of Aberdeen, where she teaches, supervises trainee therapists, and contributes to research. Her academic work explores empathy, emotional regulation, and the therapeutic impact of counselling, with a strong emphasis on ethical, reflective, and evidence-informed practice.

A core focus of Leah's clinical work is trauma and its effects on attachment, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships. She integrates trauma-informed approaches across her therapeutic practice, educational leadership, and organisational consultation, supporting both individuals and systems to develop greater psychological safety, resilience, and self-understanding.

Leah specialises in working with high-profile individuals and couples, providing a discreet, confidential, and professionally attuned therapeutic space. Her approach combines evidence-based methods with a deep understanding of human connection, offering practical tools alongside compassionate, reflective guidance grounded in both research and lived clinical experience.

Martin Gryszkiewicz-MacKenzie

PhD

Accredited CBT Psychotherapist | Chartered Psychologist

Dr Martin Gryszkiewicz-MacKenzie holds a PhD in Psychology and is an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Psychotherapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). He is also a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS).

He worked for ten years at Royal Cornhill Hospital, primarily within inpatient mental health settings, and since 2022 has been practising as a CBT Therapist with NHS Grampian. In parallel, for over a decade, he has served as Clinical Director for Psychological Help, Counselling, and Pedagogy Services at the Polish Association Aberdeen, a local charitable organisation.

Dr Gryszkiewicz-MacKenzie has extensive experience working with adolescents and adults, supporting individuals with depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, behaviour change and wellbeing promotion, long-term health conditions, and psychosexual health concerns.

He is committed to ongoing professional development and is currently undertaking Stage 2 training in Health Psychology through the BPS, working towards qualification as a Health Psychologist. Dr Gryszkiewicz-MacKenzie offers face-to-face and online therapy at Alpha Hospital Group in English and Polish.

Meghan Donnelly

MSc

Person-Centred Counsellor

Meghan G. Donnelly is a qualified counsellor with an MSc in Person-Centred Counselling from the University of Aberdeen. Prior to training as a counsellor, she worked for nine years as a university instructor and has professional experience supporting young adults with autism and learning disabilities.

She has experience delivering counselling in person and online, as well as two years of volunteer work on a crisis lifeline in Tokyo, Japan, providing telephone-based emotional support. Living and working across several Asian countries—where mental health is often stigmatised—combined with her own experiences of counselling and EMDR therapy, strongly influenced her decision to pursue a career in counselling.

Hannah Rochford-Lapiso

Child, Young Person & Adult Counsellor

Hannah Rochford-Lapiso is a qualified counsellor offering a warm, non-judgemental, compassionate, and confidential therapeutic space for children, young people, adults, and families.

Her integrative therapeutic approach draws on Psychodynamic, Person-Centred, and Montessori-based principles, allowing her to provide both short- and long-term counselling, always keeping the individual at the centre of the work.

Hannah brings 18 years of professional experience working with children and parents as a Montessori Teacher, alongside her current counselling practice. In addition to private practice, she works as a School Counsellor for an academy with ACIS Youth (Mental Health Aberdeen).

Mark Harrison

Theatre Manager & Aesthetic Practitioner

Mark Harrison has nearly 30 years of experience in nursing, with a career spanning both the public and private healthcare sectors in Scotland and Canada. He qualified with a DipHEN from Robert Gordon University in 2000 and completed postgraduate study at the University of Dundee in 2006, gaining a Bachelor of Nursing in Anaesthetics, Recovery, and Theoretical Nursing.

Mark has worked predominantly within the peri-operative environment, bringing extensive expertise in theatre management, anaesthetics, and post-operative recovery. He is passionate about education, peer support, and staff wellbeing, and has worked closely with practice education teams throughout his career.

In addition to his theatre leadership role, Mark is a skilled Aesthetic Practitioner, having received specialist training under Mr Thanassi Athanassopoulos and Dr Chris Hutton of Array Aesthetics.

Valerie McIntosh

Bank Clinic Nurse

Valerie McIntosh is a Registered Nurse with over 30 years of clinical experience. She currently works as Senior Charge Nurse in the Burns and Plastics Department at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, alongside her role supporting Alpha Hospital Group as part of the bank nursing team.

Her qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing and a Diploma in Leadership and Management. Valerie brings extensive experience in wound care, burns, plastics, and post-operative nursing, contributing to safe, high-quality patient care.

Sinead Collins

Clinical Pharmacist Independent Prescriber & Aesthetic Practitioner

Sinead Collins has over 20 years of experience in medicines management, working across community pharmacy and the NHS. She holds an MPharm, is a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, and is trained in advanced facial aesthetics, including botulinum toxin and dermal fillers.

Her practice also includes treatment for hyperhidrosis, mesotherapy, microneedling, vitamin B12 injections, and the prescribing of prescription-only medical skincare. Sinead joined Alpha Hospital Group in August 2022.

Saoirse Nevin

Aesthetician

Saoirse Nevin is an experienced aesthetician with over 15 years in clinical aesthetics. Originally trained in beauty therapy, she transitioned early into medically led skin treatments, aligning her practice with clinical standards and evidence-based care.

She specialises in energy-based technologies, including laser treatments for vascular and pigmentation concerns, skin rejuvenation, and hair growth reduction. Saoirse also performs microneedling, radiofrequency treatments, chemical peels, and advanced medical facials.

She is passionate about medical-grade skincare education, supporting long-term skin health and helping patients maintain the results of in-clinic treatments.

Anna

Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner | Inverness

Anna brings over 25 years of nursing experience to her position as an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner. In addition to her role at the clinic, she serves as a Registered Nurse consultant for the NHS. Anna holds a Master's degree in Advanced Nursing Practice with merit, a Bachelor in Health Science, and a Diploma in Adult Nursing.

Anna is our clinic nurse responsible for handling all pre-operative and post-operative appointments in Inverness, as well as being qualified in aesthetic injectables.

Louise brings over 5 years experience as a Nurse Practitioner, journeying from micropigmentation to advanced clinical skincare and aesthetics.
